Bond Bryan Architects winners of Education Building Award at Brick Awards 2017

Bond Bryan Architects attended the Brick Awards 2017 – hosted by their close collaborators at Forterra – and are delighted to have won the Education Building Award for Sheffield Hallam University, Charles Street.

The Brick Awards, organised through the Brick Development Association, are the most established design awards in the UK – recognising excellence in design and construction, using brick.

Brickwork is a key component of the Charles Street Project and its context; Bond Bryan approached the design and detailing of this element as an opportunity to engage with the immediate context whilst also reflecting the historical significance found within the detailing of the adjacent Grade II-listed Butcher Works building.

All bricks for the project were provided and made “bespoke” by Forterra at their Wilnecote factory in Staffordshire and installed by Limetree Building Ltd.

Working alongside the specialists, we have utilised a pattern of projecting headers with single and double cant brickwork to create depth and to address scale and massing.

The completed elevations provide a real sense of place within the city’s Cultural Industry Quarter (C.I.Q.) and ensure a distinct dialogue with the listed building.
