Wikkelhouse: the modular house made from cardboard

The amsterdam-based design firm, Fiction Factory, and René Snel have developed an ingenious solution to small-living – Wikkelhouse.

Wikkelhouse, meaning ‘wrapped house’, is a modular, customisable space made by wrapping high-quality cardboard around a mould, and securing it with an eco-friendly glue.

The project challenges common misconceptions around the use of cardboard as a building material by exemplifying some impressive characteristics. For example, since the construction is so lightweight, no foundation is necessary.

The cardboard utilised in the construction is sourced using sustainable practices, contributing to the house’s exceptional performance: both environmentally, acoustically, and thermally.

Wikkelhouse is a modular concept and the price is based on the configuration of segments needed. Prices start from 35,000 euros (+/-£30,000) with an expected lifetime of at least 50 years. The house is also 100% recyclable.

Wikkelhouse is currently only available in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, the U.K., and Denmark. At this point, Wikkelhouse cannot be shipped or set up in other countries.
