Innovative materials provide the perfect balance for washrooms

When it comes to washroom facilities, whether for gyms, offices or public sector spaces, material choice is a vital part of the design process. Providing the perfect balance of form and function is a key driver of washroom design. Innovative new materials, which offer exceptional durability together with design versatility, have been a game-changer for projects demanding exacting aesthetic and performance standards. Trevor Bowers, director, Washroom Washroom, explores.

Next generation materials

While glass, marble and stainless steel have long been used in washrooms and still remain popular, versatile new materials including solid surface Corian®, specially toughened glass and FENIX NTM® are increasingly being specified, especially within the commercial sector.

Manufactured using the latest nanotechnology by Italian manufacturer Arpa Industriale, FENIX NTM® is a highly durable acrylic resin surface material which has low light reflectivity for a fashionable super matt appearance.

It’s not just the ultra matt finish that makes FENIX stand out. It is also anti-fingerprint, hydro repellent, thermally self-healing and resistant to scratches and abrasion. As well as being light fast, so it won’t fade over time, it is also easy to clean, mould resistant and boasts enhanced anti-bacterial properties – making it ideal for washroom and changing areas.

Solid surface materials such as Corian, which lend themselves to being cut, bent and joined to produce a seamless smooth finish, are an ideal solution for vanities and duct panelling in washrooms. Solid surface materials are easy to clean and durable enough to withstand the rigours of a high traffic environment, while the seamless joins create a hygienic surface that prevents bacteria and mould from getting a foothold.

Making a statement with a splash of colour

While materials like FENIX NTM and solid surface Corian are prized due to their practical benefits and increased durability, there’s no need to compromise on style. They’re available in a huge range of colours, which make them an attractive addition to any washroom or changing room space, while affording facilities managers peace of mind.

By their nature, the colour and pattern runs all the way through solid surface materials meaning that they can be cut to any size and be moulded into virtually any shape for a smooth seamless finish. Corian is available in an extensive choice of attractive colours and textures, from bright, eye-catching colours to subtler tones intended to mimic the look of natural stone.

Glass too offers architects a huge amount of design versatility for washrooms. The option to back paint glass or incorporate digitally screen printed designs ensures it complements virtually any washroom design or colour scheme. Textured glass, stainless steel trims, metal mesh inserts and acid etching are just a few of the design variations available to architects looking for that bespoke touch.

Utilising new materials, products and finishes is the ideal way to create washrooms that not only look exceptional, but also save building managers time, energy and money – the perfect balance.
